What you’ll see

The exhibition brings together a mix of two-dimensional and three-dimensional works that highlight the breadth of Alex’s practice. Visitors can expect richly layered oil paintings, characterful figurative scenes and sculptural pieces that blur the line between painting and object.

A selection of the works you’ll see includes pieces such as The Fireworks in Underwater City, Chess Player, Flamenco Player, Busker, Birth of a Planet and Sunset. Across these works, Alex draws on his love of music, theatre and everyday encounters, translating them into colour, texture and movement.

Materials in the show range from oil on canvas and oil on board to oil and acrylic on fired clay and oil and acrylic on wood and fired clay. This combination of painting and sculptural form adds depth and physicality to the exhibition, encouraging viewers to engage with each piece from multiple angles.

A new chapter for “Self Expression”

The title “Self Expression” connects this exhibition with Alex’s long-term interest in the theme of personal and artistic identity. Over many years, he has returned to this idea in different ways, from intimate portraits through to large-scale public artworks. This Sydney exhibition gathers together a body of work that speaks to his journey as a Melbourne-based artist whose practice now reaches audiences across Australia and overseas.

For visitors who have only encountered Alex’s work online, “Self Expression” offers a chance to experience the originals – to stand in front of the canvases, see the detail of the brushwork, and appreciate the weight and texture of the sculptural pieces.

Plan your visit

If you are based in New South Wales or will be in Sydney in early December, you are warmly invited to drop in during gallery hours or join the opening night celebration.

Alex looks forward to welcoming friends, collectors and new visitors alike to “Self Expression” in Sydney and sharing this new body of work in Audrey Fine Art’s beautiful new gallery space.
